Ponteland RFC is thrilled to announce the appointment of Nick Townshend as the new Head Coach of the Senior Men’s 1st Team. Nick, a seasoned leader with 23-years in the Royal Air Force (RAF), brings a wealth of experience in leadership, training, and team development to the club.

Nick’s distinguished RAF career saw him holding senior operational and training roles, including Air and Space Operations Manager. In these roles, he led high-performing teams in both the UK and overseas, often in high-pressure, fast-paced, and multinational environments. His work demanded adaptability, accountability, and clear communication - qualities that are essential in the world of rugby coaching.

A significant part of Nick’s recent RAF role involved designing and delivering training programs to build resilience, cohesion, and capability in Missile Warning and Space Operations. His leadership approach is values-driven, shaped by a military ethos that emphasizes discipline, continual improvement, and supporting others to reach their full potential.

Despite his demanding career, Nick has always maintained a strong connection to rugby. He represented the RAF U23s and RAF North, and played for clubs including Alnwick, Scunthorpe, and Ponteland. His passion for the sport led him to transition into coaching, starting as a Backs and Attack Coach at Ponteland before taking on the role of Head Coach.

Now settled back in the North East with his family, Nick is reconnecting with the local rugby community to contribute to a club he holds in high regard:

"It’s a privilege to return to Ponteland RFC and to be part of developing both players and team culture as we look ahead to the new season," Nick said. "I’m excited to bring my operational leadership experience into a sporting context and help the club achieve its goals."

Ponteland RFC President, Mike Robson, shared his enthusiasm for Nick’s appointment:

"We’re delighted to welcome Nick back to the club in this new capacity. His military background and rugby experience make him an ideal fit for the team and the club and we couldn’t be happier to have his leadership and training expertise joining our players and the club as a whole."

The club is looking forward to the new season under Nick’s guidance, with a focus on fostering a strong team culture, enhancing player development, and achieving success on the pitch.
